There
was a time when most people on Earth lived in tribes, living close
to the Earth and each other. The children were free to spend time
learning about the land, its plants and animals, and about the
cool things that can be done and made with what's around us. Dad
would teach about bow and arrows, Mom about leather tanning and
clothes making. The animals themselves would teach all sorts of
lessons such as patience, stealth and cleverness. The tribe also
provided a cohesive world view in its stories, reverence and thankfulness,
humour, history, songs and dances, and its many ways of showing
youth the good way to live with other people, other creatures,
and the Earth.
We can't really
provide all this (in a week). We can, however, especially in our
summer camps, provide little glimpses into this world! In a fun,
yet thoughtful and heart-felt manner, we hope to borrow from this
past some of what used to contribute to the fullness of humanity.
We can also teach what we know about wilderness survival and primitive
skills! These wonderful disciplines teach oodles about self-confidence,
excellence, creativity, cooperation, self-sufficiency, respect,
and on and on. All the while providing an effective and fun way
of learning about nature.
